Wish Recap: “Nothing Is Sacred” Closing Show

Patrons of the Nelson Street Gallery this past weekend were greeted by a far east experience as the gallery was transformed for the “Nothing is Sacred” closing exhibition. The exhibition premiered the short film, Nothing is Sacred by Andrew Litten and Brandon Sadler. The film follows Sadler as he takes us into his world and through the art of calligraphy introduces viewers to The Tiger, The Praying Mantis, and The Snake, all personified corners of his mind. These three elements combine to reveal and guide the artist along the path of enlightenment.

We got a chance to view the film, check out several of Sadler’s pieces, and sit down with the filmmakers to get more information about “Nothing Is Sacred.” So take a look at the interview below, and check out some images from the show as well as the  “Nothing Is Sacred” trailer.

Brandon, can you tell us a bit more about your three calligraphy styles?

My writing styles are representations of each mental state I adapt according to the varied circumstances that arise in my life.  These styles come in the form of the Tiger, Preying Mantis, and Snake. The Tiger is the body and the element of fire, the Mantis is the spirit and wind, and the Snake is the mind and water. Each character style embodies the character of each animal and their symbolism. The entire character system is based in the English alphabet form but designed to resemble the Chinese character system.

What is the meaning behind the film?

The story is inspired by the concept of “rights to passage.” To me, it seems that in our time and culture we have no customs or rituals that mark the point when a child becomes an adult or when they enter the conscious stage of personal development. I was interested in creating my own mythology, my own rights of passage, to show how the leader of the Red Lotus Clan came to be. This is my Way.

Andrew, what was the process of making the film?

I met Brandon about a year ago and created a video with him for ABV, from there the ideas started running wild. Brandon had wanted to make a short film for a while that showed his three styles, but didn’t know how to turn it into a storyline. We spent almost a year conceptualizing & filming until one day it all just made sense. Brandon reached out to a dear friend of his, Christopher Buldoc, who is an incredible writer residing in Korea. We told Chris the concept & a week later he sent us a beautifully written masterpiece. After we had the written story, we went back & reshot everything in order to compliment the final storyline. It’s pretty amazing what an organic creative process can do.

Wish Recap: “All But Reason” Exhibition from Trey Moseley

When it comes to showcasing some of the best up and coming artists Atlanta has to offer, look no further than ABV Gallery. Proving true, this past weekend ABV hosted the premiere exhibition “All But Reason” of artist Trey Moseley. Moseley, also represented by ABV, unveiled a combination of paintings and installation all under the same banner that consisted of works that were both serene and violent. “All But Reason” is a completely unique experience that confronts viewers with the question, what would we see if we could peel back our flesh and draw our dark and savage nature to the surface?

At the show’s opening this past weekend, we had the pleasure to view the works and catch up with the man behind the art. So take a look at the images below, as well as some quotes from Trey Moseley.

How did you get associated with ABV Gallery in Atlanta from a farming town in middle Georgia?

When I initially moved up here I had a friend that lived in a party house here in the city, one of those places where time stops and people enter in waves. I was asked to do a large scale mural in the space. As I was painting I met a man in circle glasses and nice boots. His name was Ash Hayer. As we began to hang out, and we sipped our drinks, he told me that he worked at a design firm/gallery and that I should stop by. I decided to stop by. That was 3 years ago. What is the underlying story behind the All But Reason exhibition?

What’s the theme that ties all of the “All But Reason” pieces together?

The underlying theme is the unknown. My interest isn’t in telling my story but allowing people to think for themselves, come to there own conclusions about my work, and in doing so maybe the world around them. I only use my life as reference because it is there in front of me, it’s all I know. We are all conditioned into reality differently and because of this we react differently to the objects around us. I am interested in creating a vessel of possibilities and meanings to provide the viewer a mirror into there own understanding of the world.

What’s the next step for Trey Moseley?

To become but a storm drenching everything in it’s path.

Jonathan Mannion Releases Never-Before-Seen Photos of Kanye West from the Early 2000s

With Kanye West stepping not only into fatherhood, but also a highly anticipated and controversial release day for his latest full length, Yeezus, iconic photographer Jonathan Mannion has released a small set of never-before-seen photographs of Kanye West from the early-2000’s era. Collected from a photoset for The FADER’s inaugural “Now” Issue, the photoset was also the very first ever Kanye West magazine cover photoshoot. An obvious stark contrast exists when looking back at a pre-era Ye compared to the current Yeezy Season Mr. West. Nonetheless, a very interesting retrospective glance into a previous era of an artist who has gone on to not only re-structure the hip-hop landscape but also position himself as a strong voice within the realms of fashion as well.
